Professor John Denham, another "nationalist and xenophobe"? Of course not!

I have never heard of Gavin Jacobson or read any of his book reviews.  However he seems to have stirred John Denham, former Labour cabinet minister and MP for Southampton Itchen who now heads The University of Winchester’s Centre for English Identity and Politics, into writing to the New Statesman.

It seems that anyone who dares to mention any concern about migration is seen in some quarters as xenophobic!

John Denham’s letter, which I came across published in The Week on 15 December 2018, is reproduced below.  It first appeared in the New Statesman.

After the rush of EU migrants post-2004, the day rate for self-employed building workers in Southampton fell by 50%.  The 15,000 new arrivals were accommodated by private landlords turning family homes into multiple occupancies, thereby changing the character of streets and neighbourhoods.  Some schools were ill-equipped for their first non-English-language-speaking students.  At the time, I regarded these as legitimate concerns, but I learn from Gavin Jacobson that I was just another “nationalist and xenophobe”.  His assumption that any worry about immigration is evidence of a pernicious outlook skews his reviews of several important books on populism.

No English Democrats candidate in the recent Lewisham East parliamentary by-election. Robin Tilbrook gives reasons why.

In a recent article on his blog Robin Tilbrook, Chairman of the English Democrats, reflects on why there was no English Democrats candidate in the recent Lewisham East parliamentary by-election.  He notes the Lewisham East electorate’s lack of enthusiasm to identify as “British” let alone “English”. 

Here is part of Mr Tilbrook’s article: 

      

“When I was aware that the Labour MP, Heidi Alexander, was stepping down and causing a by-election in the Lewisham East constituency, I was immediately very doubtful as to whether it was worth the English Democrats standing there.  Although I should say that I would never discourage any of our members from standing even in the most unpromising areas if they really want to do so and have the necessary resources to do so.  Even in the most discouraging constituencies there may be some potential converts to the Cause of England!

Lewisham East is certainly such a seat.  Looking at the 2011 Census results Lewisham is a place where relatively few people identified as being “English” and surprisingly few even identified as being in any sense multi-cultural “British”.  

Since 2011 the misleadingly named “Conservative” Party (which actually is led by “Liberal” zealots) has continued with the unrestricted, uncontrolled mass immigration of New Labour and so every single year since then half a million or more immigrants have come to England, many of them settling in places like Lewisham.  That together with “white flight” or the continuing movement of English people out of such places, has led to a near total population displacement where the indigenous English population is largely absent.”

Given the circumstances described in the article I suggest there was little point in the English Democrats accepting the almost certain loss of a £500 deposit in a valiant attempt to garner the votes of the few English patriots who might be found in the constituency.

Robin Tilbrook's speech at the English Democrats Party Spring Conferance in Huntingdon.

In part of his speech on the 10th March to the English Democrats’ Spring Conference in Huntingdon, Robin Tilbrook gave his view of the current state of the Conservatives and Labour.  Here is the relevant section on Labour:

"Turning to Jeremy Corbyn’s Labour, the massive majority of Blairite  Remainiacs in the Labour Parliamentary Party has fully pushed Jeremy Corbyn into adopting a more pro-EU position that is on remaining within the Customs Union.

 

Coming out of the Customs Union is vital if there is to be any agreements with any other nations.  If we are in the Customs Union, not only can we not reach agreements with other nations on trade, but also the other nations wouldn’t even be interested in talking to us because they would know that they can trade with us by dealing with the EU and we would have to obey what the EU decides. 

So this is a troubling change of position on the part of Jeremy Corbyn but it illustrates something that has been happening within Labour for a long time, which is that Labour’s elite has been losing touch with its core traditional vote, or, as they call it the “White Working Class”, or as I would call it “English Workers”.  Our candidate for the South Yorkshire Mayoralty, David Allen, memorably and pithily put it in a recent BBC interview that Labour are “traitors to the English working class”. 

 More and more English people are realising that Labour is outright hostile to England and to English interests. 

 Labour now is an internationalist and increasingly metropolitan, statist and multi-culturalist party.  This is the same trajectory as all the Social Democrat parties across Western Europe.  The result across Western Europe has been that Social Democrat parties are no longer supported by their country’s working class.  So, for instance, in the recent French elections, we saw that French working class voters mostly supported the Front Nationale and not the middle class ideological obsessives of the French Social Democrat parties.  As the Doncaster MP, Caroline Flint put it that Labour’s “Sister Party” in France was reduced to 6%.

 I fully expect that, with the Blairites in Parliament, and with Jeremy Corbyn’s small parliamentary support group of Far-Left MPs, and with their middle class supporters in Momentum etc. that the divide between the Labour Party and its traditional support will grow eventually into an unbridgeable chasm.  We can only look forward to that day!"

My own view is that left wing parties such as the Green Party and the smaller Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition seem to be haemorrhaging support to Labour, or perhaps that should be Momentum/Labour.  Be that as it may, it does seem to me that Labour is obsessed with promoting ‘diversity’ and ‘multiculturalism’.  Such a stance goes hand in hand with their relaxed policy on immigration.  

Meanwhile the Tories' cavalier attitude to immigration provides an everlasting supply of employees for their friends and supporters in business while keeping wages down into the bargain. 

In these circumstances it is hardly surprising that the interests of the English working class take a back seat.

The Conservatives, as far as I can see, do not seem be very conservative.  I can’t think of anything they are actually conserving except perhaps the riches of the financial elite.  If the Conservatives were a product I would report them to the Advertising Standards Agency!

Incidentally, Robin Tilbrook summed up the Liberal Democrats as having: "Shrunk into almost a total permanent irrelevance" - who could argue with that?

Robin Tilbrook, Chairman of the English Democrats, has posted an interesting article on his blog comparing what an English Conservative Home Secretary said about immigration in 1924 to the views of today’s Tory leadership.

Mr Tilbrook reveals Sir William Joynson- Hicks, Conservative Home Secretary in 1924, said:

“I am going to curtail alien immigration and deport undesirables; we do not want to flood England with the alien refuse of the world.  I regard aliens who live in their own communities, marry within them, and speak their own language, as unsuitable to be British residents.”

The English Democrats Chairman writes:

“Of course in those days Conservative Home Secretaries were proper Conservatives and were also patriots who would be revolted by the current Home Secretary’s unpatriotic support for foreigners ruling over us through the EU.”

Meanwhile, it seems one Conservative, Rory Stewart the Minister of State for International Development and Minister of State for Africa at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, might have one or two thoughts along the same lines as Sir William Joynson-Hicks.

Mr Stewart, speaking of British Isil fighters, was quoted in The Telegraph saying:

“They are absolutely dedicated, as members of the Islamic State, towards the creation of a caliphate, they believe in an extremely hateful doctrine which involves killing themselves, killing others and trying to use violence and brutality to create an eighth century, or seventh century, state.

So I am afraid we have to be serious about the fact these people are a serious danger to us, and unfortunately the only way of dealing with them will be, in almost every case, to kill them.”

Doubtless British Isil fighters could be classed as “undesirables” but, if they somehow managed to return to these shores, could they be deported?   They are, after all, British and which nation would want to take in British “undesirables"?

Robin Tilbrook, Chairman of the English Democrats, gives his view of "British values" in his speech at the party's annual conference.

Here is the section of Robin Tilbrook's speech which refers to the Conservative Government's view of "British values".

"The Government’s position is now that anybody who doesn’t subscribe to their definition of fundamental “British values” is automatically an extremist. So let’s examine what you have to sign up in order not to be an extremist according to the Gospel of Mrs May. Here is their definition of fundamental British values: -


The fundamental “British values” are: - of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”


Ladies and Gentlemen let us just go through this carefully with a lawyer’s eye to analysing the definition. Obviously by definition any English nationalist such as all of us here in this room will not subscribe to fundamental “British” values.


Ignoring the point that naturally if you were a Scottish nationalist or a Welsh nationalist in Scotland or Wales it wouldn’t be suggested that you should have to subscribe to British values, since they are allowed their own Nations! We are not!

But the definition of Theresa May’s so called “British values” goes further than that. This definition means that you couldn’t even be a biblically inspired Christian because you couldn’t subscribe to these fundamental British values if you believe what Christ says:- “I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me” then they define you as an “extremist”."

The "Politically Correct" must understand that immigrants to England have to adapt to English customs, traditions and way of life. The immigrants themselves must also understand this.

Clive Lavelle of the English Democrats provided the following eminently sensible and reasonable piece.

 

The “Politically Correct” must understand that immigrants to England and especially non-Christian immigrants have to adapt to England, her customs, her traditions, and her way of life, and not expect the English to adapt to theirs. The immigrants themselves, must also understand this.

Immigrants to England and especially non-Christian immigrants must understand that they have to integrate and learn to live in England.  They must understand that it is for them to change their lifestyle and not the English who so generously welcomed them.

Immigrants to England and especially non-Christian immigrants must understand that the English are neither racist nor xenophobic. England has accepted many immigrants over the years; often from countries that would not welcome emigrants from England.

In common with other nations, the English are not willing to give up their identity or their culture.

England is a land of welcome but it's not the politicians who welcome foreigners, it’s the English people as a whole.

Immigrants to England and especially non-Christian immigrants must understand that England is a Christian country and must remain free to celebrate Christian festivals such Christmas in all traditional ways, including Christmas trees and nativity scenes.

 

English is the language of England. Immigrants to England must understand that to converse in public in a language other than English is impolite.

English law is the only law that is to be observed in England. Any non-Christian immigrants who would prefer to follow a different law should re-locate to a country where their preferred law is observed.

Anyone who disagrees with Christianity or secularism and for this reason, does not feel comfortable in England is free to find a country with whose religion they do agree and feel comfortable.

If you are a non-Christian and left your country for England and not for another non-Christian country, it is, no doubt, because you have considered that life is better in England than elsewhere. You are welcome here provided that you are willing to respect the culture, traditions and beliefs of the people with whom you have chosen to make your home.  

Just after receiving Clive's piece I came across an article in The Telegraph quoting Trevor Phillips, former chairman of the Equality and Human Rights Commission, as saying Britain is "sleepwalking to catastrophe" because of a "liberal self delusion" over the impact of mass immigration.  Here is a link to the article:

It would appear that English values, integration and unity are being sacrificed at the altar of multiculturalism and diversity.

England, the land of the English, betrayed by Labour, Liberal and Conservative politicians, is doomed!

It took only 31 years (1914 to 1945) for the inept and incompetent British political establishment to cause the fall of the British Empire.  According to this article "Unmaking England.  Will immigration demolish in decades a nation built over centuries?" by Benjamin Schwartz in The American Conservative, they appear to have made an even quicker job, in the 19 years since 1997, of ruining the nature of England. 

However, whereas the end of the British Empire was the result of blunders and short-sighted decisions by political leaders such as Asquith, Lloyd George, Chamberlain and Churchill, the unmaking of England by Blair, Brown, Cameron and Clegg has been determined and deliberate.

The concluding paragraphs of Schwartz's article illustrate what patriotic English politicians and activists are up against.

"In the context of the enlightened cosmopolitan values that hold sway in Britain today, once the majority’s views are thus ruled beyond the pale, liberal democracy permits—in fact demands—that the majority be excluded from political consultation. At the very best, it is safe to say that the confines of acceptable public debate on culturally determined ethnic differences, national identity, and mass immigration are exceedingly narrow. The consensus of the bien pensant can, of course, be just as effective as outright censorship in its stultifying political effect, as Orwell explained:

At any given moment there is an orthodoxy, a body of ideas which it is assumed that all right-thinking people will accept without question. It is not exactly forbidden to say this, that or the other, but it is ‘not done’ to say it, just as in mid-Victorian times it was ‘not done’ to mention trousers in the presence of a lady. Anyone who challenges the prevailing orthodoxy finds himself silenced with surprising effectiveness. A genuinely unfashionable opinion is almost never given a fair hearing.

In the case of the political discussion surrounding the impact and ramifications of mass immigration, the result, whether one applauds or bemoans the situation, has been to exclude the majority sensibility from anything resembling full and free public expression and to deny the majority’s concerns and preferences anything resembling their full political weight.

The impotent seething abundantly in evidence among Old Britain is rooted in their disfranchisement, in the disdain with which their political and cultural leaders have forsaken them, and in their realization that those leaders, ensorcelled by fatuous slogans and intellectual fashion, in pursuit of vacuous and untested ideas, have irretrievably transformed an ancient nation."

I found the article, which I came across on Robin Tilbrook's (Chairman of the English Democrats) blog, made depressing reading.  England, the land of the English, is doomed if those leading Conservative, Labour and Liberal politicians in the British establishment who are determined to promote mass immigration, multiculturalism and diversity carry on unchecked.

Mass Immigration proceeds apace - as planned by Conservatives, Labour and Liberal Democrats.

In my view, the Labour Party encouraged mass immigration in order to promote multiculturalism and, at the same time, advance its doctrine of “diversity” with almost religious fervour.  The Liberal Democrats advocated mass immigration, without any upper limit as far as England was concerned, in order to further their Internationalist agenda.
Now, the Conservative government has achieved record-breaking levels of net immigration.  Ignore David Cameron’s pledge to cut net immigration to the “tens of thousands”: the Conservatives have a policy of mass immigration aimed at providing an inexhaustible supply of cheap labour for its friends and supporters in the business world to exploit.

As Peter Hitchens wrote in the Mail on Sunday (30^th August), “. . .  Tory concern about immigration was faked.  They don’t want the power to stop it.”

This letter published in the Western Daily Press on March 14th still rings true today.

Immigration policy has failed dismally

David Cameron has failed spectacularly in his aim of reducing immigration to the tens of thousands. The failure is so total that one has to wonder whether he meant what he said in the first place. Furthermore, George Osborne has suggested that reducing immigration is now just an “aspiration”. It seems obvious that Conservative immigration policy is to have no upper limit on numbers; exactly the same as Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party. Astonishingly, Nigel Farage too has abandoned any cap.

How can this country support a burgeoning population? If England is not to have a vast concrete and Tarmac urban sprawl from the North Sea to Offa’s Dyke there needs to be a stable population. Sadly, for the English and their green and pleasant land, such a policy would be anathema to the British political establishment which appears intent on making England the most densely populated place on Earth.

English Democrats, Somerset

Is London an English city? Apparantly not any more according to John Cleese and Terence Stamp.

Several years ago, when I lived in Bristol, I read an article in the Bristol Evening Post, I think, in which John Cleese, who hails from Weston-Super-Mare, was reported as saying he lived in Bath instead of London because it no longer felt like an English city.  At about the same time he was reported in the Daily Mail as saying that mass immigration had turned London into a city which is no longer English and that he felt like a foreigner walking through the capital's streets.

Now Terence Stamp, another actor, has just given practically the same opinion.  Apparently he now feels like an alien in his own country.  The Daily Mail  reports him as saying, "When I grew up in East London everyone seemed to speak English, and now you can barely get by speaking our own language." and "I feel like its not London anymore; not the one I used to know anyway." and also "It would be very sad if London stopped being predominantly English."

On a personal note, I moved home from Bristol to a market town in South Somerset where it feels, comparatively, like living in the 1950s.  England's great cities, and London in particular, are changing - and not for the better in my view.

 

Immigrants, cultural context and the Law

In her ruling the judge said: "Proper allowance must be made for what is, almost certainly, a different cultural context."

Behaviour is not part of our culture

Back in February 2011, you published a letter from me in which I said that I am all in favour of a multi-racial England, but that immigrants should adapt to English customs and culture, and not expect the locals to adapt to theirs.

On Points West, the other night, I learned about the conviction of three Somali men who abused and raped girls as young as 13. They claimed that this behaviour was part of their culture.

Well, it is not part of ours.
